THE CHALLENGE
The replica Massachusetts State Building located at the Eastern States Exposition (The Big E) in West Springfield, Massachusetts was experiencing major exterior deterioration and the EPDM roof had reached the end of its useful service life. As well, the interior bathrooms were all outdated and needed to be modernized.
CBI’S SOLUTION
The flat EPDM roof was replaced with a built up roofing membrane system including new gutters and downspouts as well as repair to standing seam metal roofs at leak locations. The slate roof also needed spot slate replacement. The exterior of the building needed complete restoration including repointing of the entire perimeter of the building, stripping and repainting all of the woodwork and trim, repairs to cracked brick, installation of new through wall flashing at window heads, rebuilding of parapet walls above the sloped roof, removal of abandoned metal within the brick, and clear sealing. As well, the wood columns were rotted and needed to be replaced and the replacement of deteriorated wood windows and weatherproofing at leak locations.
Also included in the scope was the renovation of the interior toilet rooms to comply with MAAB and ADA requirements including MEP and finishes.
