THE CHALLENGE
CBI provided design services for a complete historical restoration of this symbolic entrance to the University.
CBI’S SOLUTION
The renovations to the Van Wickle Gates consisted of the complete removal of the wrought iron gates and fences to the shop to sandblast; replacement of top rails; repairs to all fixed and working parts; polishing of all exposed bronze castings; finishing with a high-tech paint system consisting of a zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate coat, and polyurethane finish coat; and re-installation of a new bronze socket and stainless steel slip connections.
CBI was also engaged to rebuild, repair, and repoint brick and decorative stone masonry. New brick and mortars were chosen to match the existing, with approval by the Providence Historic Commission. CBI also designed and installed new foundations under the gates and site lighting.
