CHALLENGE
CBI designed the complete historical restoration of this late 19th century structure located at Brown University.
CBI’S SOLUTION
CBI evaluated the existing structure including the roofing, windows, masonry entrances as well as copper gutters and flashing. We found that the masonry stones, particularly at the roof edge level, had been displaced due to continued water infiltration from failed copper gutters. Additionally, the windows were so severely deteriorated that water was pouring into the wall system through the window frames.
The new design included extensive rebuilding of sandstone blocks, particularly at the roof edge, full cutting and pointing of the building exterior masonry, replacement of the slate roofing which had passed its useful lifespan, and all the copper trim. The work also included a full window replacement with new wood windows to match the existing that have an aluminum exterior finish in a custom color.
CBI also redesigned the entrance portico to include a historically accurate wood storm front to replace an inappropriate aluminum entry door system.
